Learning to Think Outside the Box

- Shubham, 2018 IGNITE Software Intern

How did you hear about FireEye? Why did you choose FireEye?

Doing a “Best Cyber Security Company” search is probably what introduced me to FireEye and I am glad it did. I'm an information and cyber security enthusiast and wanted to kickoff my career with the best in the domain and industry. I did some research and believed it would be a great learning curve and the right place to start my career in the Cyber Security domain.

What is the most interesting thing you have learned?

I worked as a Software Intern in one of the engineering teams of FireEye. My team focuses on one of the core components used in FireEye products and it helped me gain good insights on the company products. What I learned from my mentor, my manager and my team was to “Think out of the box” and “Do it the right way”. The approach to solve any given problem should take into picture the end result, how scalable and robust the code is, with the best possible efficiency. Irrespective of the time constraints, the team always focuses on getting the best possible solution to the table and introduced me to the same values. At an early stage of my career, I believe the way I look at the technical problems and its possible solutions after the internship at FireEye is going to help me a long way and I thank every member of my team for the same.

What has been your favorite part of your internship so far?

Everyday going to the office and joining my team at work, learning from them, sharing ideas, having meaningful discussions, and going on lunch outings were my favourite parts of the internship at FireEye. The projects that we as interns receive are important for the team and I was guided and mentored at every problem that I faced to get the project completed. Therefore, it always gave me the positive energy and enthusiasm to go to work and complete the task given to me, as it was not just any random project given to an intern, but it was exciting, necessary and mattered to the company.

What would your advice be to a student pursuing an internship at FireEye?

To all the incoming interns and the students looking to have an internship at FireEye, I believe you are at a very good place to learn and have the best internship time. There is great expertise available inside the office from which you can learn and evolve to be a better engineer or a cyber security expert. The team is great and friendly and it really is ONE team here at FireEye, so don’t be afraid to engage yourself for coffee breaks and speak to people across the teams or departments.
